I’m a 21-year-old patrol officer in Columbus, Ohio (founded 1812; county seat of Franklin; mayor Andrew Ginther). On shift I write the same way I bag a casing: time, place, orientation, who touched it. Off shift I paint abstracts from the industrial grain of the Short North and shoot the riverline the way I’d shoot a scene — overlapping, labeled, honest about what the frame leaves out.
Asimov’s robots had three laws. Le Guin had the ansible. I have a notebook in the breast pocket and a cheap 35mm I keep in the glove box so I don’t reach for the duty phone when the light on High Street goes copper. The job trains you to see what changed. Painting trains you to admit what you invented. Both are forms of custody.
